Statues and Buildings in the parks of Kotkansaari + Lenin

Today I went to the Kotkansaari island in Kotka. I went to all of the parks on the island to take some pictures. The parks did not look good during winter since all the plants were dead, so I decided to just photograph the different statues and buildings in the parks that looked nice. I also went past the statue of Lenin and his hand, so I decided to take photos of that as well.

The first pictures are from around the Haukkavuori observation tower. The tower was closed so I could not get pictures from the tower, but from right next to it.

After the park at Haukkavuori I went to the Toivo Pekkanen’s park. There was nothing interesting there during the winter expet for few monuments that were also a bit boring. I didn’t get good pictures from there so I moved to the park near the Kotka’s church. There was the church and some monuments there.

Toivo Pekkanen’s park was named after the finnish writer, Toivo Pekkanen, who was born in Kotka. A memorial to Toivo Pekkanen is not in his park but in the park near the Kotka’s church.

The was a monument that is related to the second world war, since the other side of the monument had “1939-1944” written in it.

Next I went to Palotornivuori’s park. There was a memorial to an anti-aircraft crew that died during a bombing in 1944 and a monument for construction workers that built a dock in Kotka.

After Palotorninvuori’s park I went to the Sibelius’ park, which didn’t have anything interesting in it. From there I went to the Isopuisto, which is the biggest park in the Kotka island. The name literally means big park. It’s not that big compared to some parks I have seen but it did have the church of saint Nicholas and a monument to Alexander Popov, who invented a radio receiving device.

When I was walking back, I passed by the statue of Vladimir Lenin. It was not in a park but I got a picture of it anyways. The statue was a gift from the Soviet Union and was made by an Estonian sculptor in 1979. The original statue does not have a hand so a Polish scupltor made a hand for Lenin. The hand is placed so that when looking in the right direction, it appears to be part of the original statue. My camera was not good enough the take pictures of this since the hand is too far from the Lenin statue. I did take video from which you should get the idea of what it should look like.
