Birds at the bay of Mansikkalahti

At the coasts of Katariina and Sapokka, in the southern part of Kotka Island, there is a beach and a marina for small boats. Among the marina and the beach, water and sea birds such as swans, geese, and gulls live.

At the bay of Mansikkalahti, I saw many barnacle geese with their goslings. Barnacle geese used to be seen in Finland only when they migrated through the country. They spread to Finland in the 1980’s and are now found mostly in the coastal areas.

Mute swans are another species of bird that is not native to Finland but now lives in the coastal areas. Two of them with their cygnets swam near the beach at bay of Mansikkalahti. Mute swans are very territorial, so these are most likely the only ones that live near this bay.

To the north-east of the beach of Mansikkalahti is the marina of Sapokka. Marina is a port used by yachts and small boats. Near the marina are the Sapokka Water Park, a coast guards station, and various restaurants.
