Waters and Wetland – Along the Road of Mussalo

The island of Mussalo in Kotka is a large island in the Gulf of Finland. The coast of Mussalo consists of various bays and straits. The road of Mussalontie is one of the main roads in Mussalo. It runs from the northern part of the island to about halfway south. Along the road there are residential areas to the west, while there are are views of the coast of Mussalo to the east and on bridges across the water. Alot of the coast is privately owned land, so there are only a few places where you can go all the way to the coast.

The bridge across the strait of Vasikkasalmi connects Mussalo to the Finnish mainland. From there the Hepuniemi peninsula, Petäjäkari rocks, and Käärikäs island can be seen to the west.

Along the road further south, there is a large wetland to the east. There the ground is flooded with water and reeds cover the entire area.

To the east of Mussalontie and further south is the bay of Turanlahti. The bay contains many small piers for small boats. Reeds cover the area close to the coast and the island of Lossaari is located in the bay. Further south, Mussalontie ends by connecting to the road of Merituulentie.
