Riding Through the Söderfjärden Crater

The Söderfjärden area is an old impact crater located near the city of Vaasa in Western Finland. Today the crater is used for farming and is filled with fields and surrounded by farms. There is also a dirt road going through the crater itself. I visited the crated and rode a bike trough the crater and along its edge. I took the pictures here during this visit. The crater is not very deep, so it is easy to ride through it. The fields created a very pretty rural scene during summer when I went there.

There is a parking place at the town of Sulva near the crater from where I started my trip. The town itself looked very pretty, but I only traveled past a part of it to get to the crater.

Near Sulva, there is an observation tower from where much of the crater is visible. From there I went first a short distance on a road near the edge before getting to the road going through the crater.

The road through the crater is very flat and is surrounded by fields on all sides. You can go all the way through in a straight line or take one of the branches from the main road and get to another side of the crater. There were a bunch of horses on the fields near the edge.

I did not go all the way through the straight road. Once I got to the center, I went through a branch of the road that took me to the opposite edge of the crater from the town of Sulva where I started. There is a some kind of museum at the center, but I did not visit it.

Once I got to the edge, I traveled along it halfway across the perimeter of the crater back to Sulva. On the edge, there were a bunch of farms and occasionally forest next to the road. However, these were not as interesting as riding trough the crater. The total distance I rode was only about 20 km.
